Crafted by Kato Ryotaro, 8th generation of Kobei Kiln. Oribe sake cup, fired in a self-built anagama kiln. The form is subtly irregular, with a naturally undulating rim and visible throwing marks on the body. Black glaze and Oribe green glaze are applied in separate sections, varying in thickness, and flowing naturally during high-temperature firing, creating subtle textures where the glaze pooled. Oribe ware, originating from the aesthetic sensibilities of the Momoyama period, values the "scenery" of the piece over perfect uniformity. The 8th generation artisan follows this tradition, using an anagama kiln to imbue his works with deeper earthiness and richer kiln variations.
